Bill Clennan: Winning Words from Speakers Hall of Fame Inductee, Bill Clennan, Plus Tips for Great Business Cards

I recently met Bill Clennan, an inductee of the Speakers Hall of Fame at a course I attended in Los Angeles. He has been a Professional, Motivational and Inspirational Speaker for more than 38 years and has given over 10,000 presentations!

However, what impressed me most about Bill was his warmth, humility and charm. Every day he greeted me with a broad smile and a hug. After three short days I felt as though I'd known him for years.

On the back of his business card he has a poem which he wrote himself you can click HERE to listen to this poem and for an audiopostcard you can email to a friend or read it below:

"The contest lasts for moments though the training's taken years
it wasn't the winning alone that was worth the work and all the tears.
The applause will be forgotten and the prize will be misplaced.
But the long hard hours of practice will never be a waste.
For in trying to win you build a skill.
You learn that winning depends on will.
You never grow by how much you win;
You only grow by how much you put in.
So any new challenge you've just begun,
Put forth your best and you've already won."

Bill Clennan

I hope this poem has inspired you to become a WINNER! You can receive a weekly tip to build your Winner's Image by simply sending an email to Winner's Image.

Finally, Bill Clennan made his business card memorable and unique by placing his poem on the back of it.

If you're anything like me then when you attend events you probably end up with several business cards and, particularly if you do not follow-up on them immediately you can often forget who the cards actually belong to.

So if you would like a few tips on how to maximise the impact of your business cards click the link below to download my special report:

A Powerful Video Message that Unequivocally Demonstrates What it Takes to be a WINNER!

The key to successful goal achievement and what it takes to be a winner is powerfully displayed in a movie clip that I watched recently.

Someone who I consider to be a mentor, colleague and friend, Dr Noah St John, of The Success Clinic recently sent me the URL to the movie clip.

He said that one of the speakers at a business conference he was attending showed in during his presentation and that it brought tears to his eyes.

I thought to myself "softie" but I too was crying before the six minute clip was over.

So many lessons can be learnt from this clip.

1. The power of belief,
2. The importance of leadership, and
3. The importance of having a mentor or coach who believes in you.

It also re-defined the meaning to give of your best and brought home the fact that many of us simply do not give of our best even when we say we do. As another of my mentors, Dr Topher Morrison, says if you strive for excellence you will at least end up being good but if you aim to just be good then you'll only end up being average. What's more if you're content with just being average the chances are that in reality your results will be poor.

This movie clip made me realise just how much more we can achieve when we truly commit ourselves. All too often we start on an endeavour and give up when we encounter the first obstacle. Or worse we often don't even start because we don't have the self-belief that we can succeed.

Yet, as Dr Maxwell Maltz said,

"Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs."

So I hope that this movie clip inspires you to greatness and helps to:

1. Boost your faith regarding what you believe you can achieve in life, and
2. Demonstrates to you just what it takes to be a WINNER!

The Key to Successful Goal Achievement - Perseverance

I just love watching the Olympics, witnessing the numerous feats of athleticism, skill, courage, endurance and passion. Athletes have to hone their bodies as well as their minds and, on the day, it is often the individual who has greatest control over their mind that wins. Major championships are always dramatic and what occurred during the Pairs Figure Skating Programme in the 2006 Winter Olympics at the Turino Palavela was certainly that.

The last couple to skate was Xhang and Xhang from China, one of three pairs of Chinese skaters in this particular contest. Totomania and Marinin from Russia had produced a sublime performance and were tipped for gold. For Xhang and Xhang to succeed in their quest for the major prize their skating would have to be impeccable as well as encapsulating the difficult technical elements such as the quad jump where the skater makes four revolutions mid-air. This is a situation where potential does not come into the equation - only what you do on the occasion can be marked and with the new scoring system this was never more the case.

It wasn't that long ago that the quad jump was executed for the first time in competition and now, just like what followed when Roger Bannister broke the 4min mile barrier in 1954, any skater of merit has a quad jump in their bag of tricks. When we see skaters gliding seemingly effortlessly over the ice we forget just how technical, acrobatic and even dangerous much of what they are doing is.

In pairs skating one of the required elements is a throw jump. Imagine being tossed into the air, whipping yourself around a few times with feet and body perfectly aligned and then touching down for a flawless landing.

For a chance at the gold medal, Xhang and Xhang had to go for broke. The opening moments of their routine included a throw jump involving a quad Salchow. Xhang performed the quad but couldn't control the landing. She ended in an awkward box split, twisting and banging her left knee in the process. If that sounds painful, imagine how it must have felt! With her legs splayed and still out of control she crashed into the barriers.

Apart from feeling empathy for the pain Xhang must have felt as she crash-landed one could not help but also feel sympathy for this skater so graceful one second and then sprawled on the ice, like a fledgling learning the rudiments of flight, the next. The audience gasped and the British commentator Barry Davies said resignedly:

"…Tough on them because they are going to end with nothing and she clearly is in considerable pain…What a shame!"

Xhang was in obviously discomfort. If she didn't continue the programme she and her partner would walk away with nothing yet if she did skate she risked permanent injury. There was a brief consultation with their coach but no medical treatment. It felt as though time stood still as Xhang continued to move gingerly around the ice watched anxiously by her concerned partner. Then to everyone's surprise the skaters moved into position to resume their performance. The usually eloquent Barry Davies was incredulous:

"Surely not! Surely not! They would have to pick up from where they left off. Have I got that right? I don't see how they can. I don't see how they can." His voice trailed off.

Fellow commentator Robin Cousins, obviously flummoxed, was slow to respond.

"I'm speechless actually because I can't believe that does not hurt to the point where she can't perform. This is a skater that has a career ahead of her that could risk further damage by performing on it [knee]."

But this was the Olympics and you don't walk away from an Olympic dream. The pair did literally pick up from where they left off and as their music restarted the audience erupted with applause for this plucky skater.

The rest of their programme went without any major hitches including the second of their compulsory throw jumps. Xhang continued to hide the pain she must have been experiencing. When the pair finished skating the audience were on their feet. While Xhang and Xhang awaited their scores she finally received initial first-aid treatment. The knee was strapped and more of that ice that had been her downfall minutes ago was applied. Fortunately, although she was limping around the Olympic village the following day, Xhang is expected to make a full recovery.

Xhang and Xhang took silver behind the Russian pair, Totomanina and Marinin, knocking team-mates Shen and Zhao into third place and knocking team-mates Pang and Tong out of the medals altogether.

Nothing worthwhile is easy. You've got to aim high. You will make mistakes but when you fall (as opposed to "fail") get up, brush yourself off and try again. The bounty is great for those with the courage and perseverance to see things through to the end.

Also, don't let your emotions get in the way. Despite her pain Xhang remained composed and focused. She kept her eye firmly on the prize and she and her partner were duly awarded the silver medal. And, what's more remarkable about this tale is that a few weeks ago the pair hadn't even been thinking of being at the Olympics.

Persevere; you are but a moment away from greatness.

Do You Have a Winning Daily Program?

If your life is not currently where you want it to be then the chances are that you do not have a winning daily program.

You do not become successful overnight. Success is a result of diligent and persistence application of winning habits. You are a confluence of what you repeatedly do. As Aristotle said:

"You are what you repeatedly do. Excellence is not an event - it is a habit."

You can examine what a person eats on a regular basis and accurately diagnose the current state of their health and how their health status may change if they continue with that particular diet. From a person's exercise regimen you can determine a person's physical state of health. Similarly, from an individual's money habits you can tell if they are heading for financial ruin or financial freedom.

John Assaraf, author of "Having it All: Achieving Your Life's Goals and Dreams" says that he is most productive when he has a winning daily program.

At the start of each year he creates a "binding agreement" which he signs and says that he will pay the price necessary to reach his life's dreams and destiny without being dishonest or deceitful.

In addition, on a daily basis he:

1. Meditates,
2. Exercises for at least an hour (does this five days a week),
3. Practices visualisation,
4. Reviews his goals for about 15-20 minutes each day,
5. Studies for about 30 minutes to an hour everyday,
6. Eats healthy, fresh foods,
7. Appreciates love,
8. Expresses gratitude, and
9. Has FUN!

To help him stay focused on his winning daily program, John Assaraf keeps his goals, binding agreement and vision board on his desk or in a prominent place elsewhere in his office so he has a constant reminder of the targets he has set himself to achieve. Most importantly, he takes ACTION every single day towards achieving his goals.

When you create and practice a winning daily program you cannot help but make progress in your life and, as a consequence, you start to feel better about yourself. As your self-esteem improves this will encourage you to keep developing and practicing your winning habits and you will achieve greater and greater success.

"Our self image and our habits tend to go together. Change one and you will automatically change the other."
Dr. Maxwell Maltz

So it is critical to review what you do a daily basis and ask yourself:

1. Are my habits taking me towards or away from my goals?
2. What do I need to do more of?
3. What do I need to do less of?
4. What should I be doing that I'm currently not doing?
5. When will I put into practice my winning daily program?

Remember that you have settled for the level of success you have currently attained. Success is all about choices. It's now up to you to choose to take your success to a higher level. Choose today to create and apply your winning daily program.

Fail Your Way to Success

Life can be viewed as a series of ups and downs or as failures punctuated by high points - successes. What many fail to realise is that it follows that the greater the level of success you achieve in your life then the more failures you experience. And we have to have both - the failures as well as the successes - for how else would we be able to appreciate our success when it does finally arrive.

Jack Canfield said in an interview that Chicken Soup For The Soul® (co-authored by Mark Victor Hansen) was turned down by 144 publishing houses.

"…nobody wanted it. They all said it was a stupid title, that nobody bought collections of short stories, that there was no edge - no sex, no violence. Why would anyone read it?"

Their agent gave up after the first 33 rejections New York publishers.

"Sorry boys, I can’t sell it."

Quite frankly, could you blame him? After all, he didn’t have the same personal investment in this product as did Jack Canfield and his co-author Mark Victor Hansen.

But the "experts" were wrong.

Chicken Soup For The Soul® became an international bestseller and inspired a whole series of over 100 Chicken Soup books with titles as obscure as Chicken Soup For The Scrapbooker’s Soul and Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover’s Soul Dog Food. Really!

In the long run, the agent’s lack of staying power turned out to be an advantage to Canfield and Hansen as they got to keep the agent’s 15% commission.

It takes a very special mindset to persevere seemingly against all odds - the mindset of a goal achiever, the mindset of a WINNER!

Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen are not the only authors to have suffered repeated rejections for their literary efforts.

Examples of Other Famous Authors who Experienced Numerous Rejections

1. John Grisham’s A Time to Kill was also repeatedly rejected. A Time to Kill was turned into a major film with a stellar cast including Samuel L Jackson, Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey.

2. Alex Haley’s Roots was rejected. Yet, the television serialisation of Roots took the world by storm.

3. James Redfield’s The Celestine Prophecy was initially self-published. It was its underground success that made publishing houses sit up and take notice. The Celestine Prophecy is a testament to the power of viral marketing. It sold over a hundred thousand copies within months of its first printing primarily by word of mouth.

So you see, if you truly believe in something, within reason of course, then follow it through. Keep trying different combinations and approaches and until you will find a way to bring your idea, your dream into fruition.

I was reading recently about Corey Rudyl, the Internet Marketing guru who turned a $25 investment into over $40,000,000 in online sales and, in the process helped thousands start their own Internet businesses. Corey died suddenly and tragically in a car accident last year. Corey loved car racing and he also loved the Internet business. He was just 34 when he died and it is a testament to his tenacity, perseverance and vision that the company he founded, the Internet Marketing Centre, continues to grow ever more profitable under the leadership of his protégé, Derek Gehl.

Did Corey Rudyl make mistakes? Of course he did but he did not see them as such. He had the foresight to recognise that each “failure” could be turned into a huge success if he simply applied the lessons he learnt from his mistakes.

However, perhaps one of the most famous men who would not give up in the face of repeated failures was Thomas Edison. When Napoleon Hill interviewed Edison he joked that if he hadn’t found the secret of the incandescent lamp that at that very moment he would be in the laboratory working on it instead of wasting time talking to him! Edison also said,

"I had to succeed because I finally ran out of things that wouldn’t work."

We now all benefit from Thomas Edison’s invention in ways that Edison himself may have found too numerous to contemplate. Or perhaps I’m being presumptuous.

Walt Disney was another great visionary who never gave up. When it was discovered that he was buying thousands of acres of swamp land in Florida folk thought he had gone mad but they didn’t have his vision. Walt Disney actually died before his dream could be fully realised.

Someone later remarked to an associate of Walt Disney that it was a shame that he did not see his theme park in all its splendour. The associate smiled and replied,

"Oh, he saw it."

Perhaps Thomas Edison’s vision of how the incandescent bulb would illuminate our lives was far more detailed and expansive than I give him credit for. Who am I to talk? While I work on eliminating my limiting beliefs I don’t know that I would have had the staying power to do 10,000 experiments.

I guess my point is that if you learn from your failures and keep striving towards your goals or dreams you will achieve success because that which you seek is also seeking you. I'd like to leave you with this quote by Thoreau,

"If a person advances confidently in the direction of their dream, and endeavours to live the life they have imagined, they will meet with success unexpected in common hours."
