A friend of mine was reading Alan Sugar’s biography recently. He said that he was really enjoying reading this book and that he was learning a great deal about business success from reading it.
He also mentioned that one of the things that most impressed him about Alan Sugar was that he was quick to drop projects that gave early signs they weren’t working.
This is something that many individuals are reluctant to do or, worse yet, some individuals don’t even start a particular project because they’re afraid it will fail. And yet the individuals who are most successful in life are generally those who have experienced the most failures and, in many cases, have experienced spectacular failures.
Someone who has achieved phenomenal success and also spectacular failure is Bill Bartmann. He says:
I’ve failed more times (and probably more spectacularly) than almost anyone on the planet. Who do you know that can say they’ve been a millionaire three times…bankrupt twice…and a billionaire once?
Bill Bartmann formed a company back in the 80s called Commercial Financial Services (CFS). This company became was the vehicle that took him to billionaire status. However, (I was going to say “Unfortunately…” but that really depends upon how you view what I’m about to say next) his business partner committed fraud, CFS folded and Bill Bartmann himself was accused of fraud. Had he been convicted of the 57 indictments he would have been jailed for a very long time.
Bill Bartmann went through an ordeal that some individuals simply wouldn’t have been able to handle. I’ve heard stories of some individuals who, during this recession, lost a substantial amount of their fortune yet, by most people’s standards, would still be considered very rich but they took their own life rather than work on re-building their fortune.
Following the collapse of CFS Bill Bartmann and his family suffered a great deal. He even had to represent himself at his trial after the lawyers who he’d hired to represent him withdrew their services at the last minute - in fact just before the trial was due to commence. Nonetheless, he successfully defended himself (the trial itself could form the basis of a rather interesting movie but that’s another story) and began the process of once again picking up the pieces of his life.
In 2009, Bill Bartmann Enterprises was acknowledged by Inc. 500 – a list of the most rapidly growing companies in the USA. Bear in mind, the US as well as many countries globally are still experiencing a deep recession. So to successfully start a company at this time is one thing. To start a company and win an award for it being one of the fastest growing companies in America is a different ball game.
However, Bill Bartmann has done this before. In fact, this is the fourth time that Inc. 500 has recognized one of his companies as being among those growing the most rapidly in the USA.

It’s clear from Bill Bartmann’s track record, despite its ups and downs, that he knows a thing or two about being successful. Some people even regard him as some kind of “success mutant” and if you know of Bill Bartmann’s origins you might be tempted into thinking the same. He was born into abject poverty, is a high school dropout, a former gang member, worked in a slaughter house, was nearly paralysed after falling whilst in a drunken stupor…
