Practicing Daily Positive Affirmations - Wash Your Mouth Out With Soap!

Actually, I'm not recommending that when practicing daily positive affirmations that you need to literally wash your mouth out with soap - I'm just using the expression figuratively. Allow me to explain further.

You've probably heard the expression used when someone, usually a child, is overhead uttering profanity. And the reason why I'm using the expression here is because so many times people tell me that they are practicing daily positive affirmations but 99% of what comes out of their mouth is negative.

If you have a conversation with these individuals they are constantly putting themselves down and saying what they aren't good at. They are quick to list their faults and quick at identifying what's wrong with their lives.

What they don't seem to realise is that every time they put themselves down or 'highlight' what they don't like about their life, they are affirming what they don't want in their lives. And they are negating any of the positive effects of their practice of positive affirmations.

"You will never, ever amass enough power to accomplish your goals and your dreams if you are constantly weakening yourself."
James Arthur Ray, Author of "Harmonic Wealth"

Plus, when you listen to these individuals, their negative self-talk is always done in a very matter-of-fact manner because it's what they truly believe about themselves. But when they say their positive affirmations you can bet that same degree of matter-of-factness is most definitely absent. So they sabotage their efforts to create positive change in two ways:

1. They don't clean up their act regarding their self-talk, and
2. They do not fully commit to their positive affirmations.

With respect to the latter when you practice your affirmations you have to practice them as though they are completely true even though they may not be as yet. Now I can sense that you have doubts about this. Then understand this - the negative things you say about yourself may be true now but were not always the case. You developed limiting beliefs and practiced negative affirmations for so long that they become fact.

The actor Cary Grant said,

"I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally I became that person. Or he became me."

And he also said,

"Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant."

In other words he was practicing a role that he wanted, enjoyed and liked. You can do the same. You are the director and leading actor in this movie which, incidentally, is called "This is Your Life".

I can hear you say,

"But the fact is..."

Forget the facts! As Patricia Shambrook said,

"Don't give me the facts, give me the truth. The facts are always changing."

And the truth is you were born as close to perfection as anything can be. The majority of your limiting and negative beliefs were learnt and they were ingrained into you through repetition.

It's time for change.

You can re-program your mind for the life you desire. And ironically, you can achieve this through repetition as well but the through the repetition of what you want.

And so you have to stay in character. You can't practice daily positive affirmations at a set time of day and then for the rest of the day trash yourself with your negative self-talk.

But you may have to take baby steps. For instance, if you say to yourself "I'm hopeless at managing money", you may want to practice saying "I'm getting better at managing money" until you feel confident enough to practice the affirmation "I am an excellent money manager".

It is not expected that you monitor your thoughts and self-talk every moment of the day but do regularly check in to what you're saying. You can also ask your close friends to help you with this exercise and a coach will certainly pick up on any negative self-talk because it's amazing at how oblivious some people can be to this. And, if all else fails, keep a bar of soap handy for when you hear that trashy, profane negative self-talk coming from your mouth.

And if washing your mouth out with soap is a tad too extreme then I'd like to recommend something far more enjoyable to help you stay on track with your practice of daily positive affirmations. For a wealth of resources that will help make practicing affirmations effortless and fun visit.

Manifest Your Goals & Dreams by Harnessing The Power of Your Emotions & Feelings

Expressing your feelings and emotions is often regarded as a weakness. However, it is the lack of control of your feelings and emotions rather than their expression which is the true weakness. What's more they play a critical role in the process of manifesting your goals and dreams.

"The Secret" focused on The Law of Attraction in the manifestation process. However, scientists are now proposing that the manner in which we manifest our goals and dreams is more of a process of reflection than attraction. This being the case, James Allen was spot on when he wrote in "As A Man Thinketh":

"Mind is the master power that moulds and makes and Man is mind and ever more he takes the tool of thought and, shaping what he wills, brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills. He thinks in secret and it comes to past environment is but his looking glass."

In other words your environment is a reflection of your inner world. Your thoughts lead to feelings and your feelings are expressed through your heart which is more than just a key component of our circulatory system. Your heart is a powerful emitter of electromagnetic radiation.

We tend to underestimate the space that surrounds us because it appears invisible. Yet, you see, the space that surrounds us is not empty space. It is packed with potentiality and we have the ability to influence this space which individuals call the field or the matrix among other names. And the manner in which we communicate with this field is through our heart. And our feelings are pivotal in this process.

Now Bob Proctor said,

"Many people today live their entire lives on the basis of "seeing is believing." That is to say, the only images they get emotionally involved with are the ones they can discern with their physical senses. But the individuals of real "vision," down through the ages, have always known the overriding principle is, "what you see is what you get.""

And fundamentally what he meant by this is that you have to see the things you desire in your mind and involve your physical senses with those images. You then have to allow yourself to feel the emotions you would feel if you saw, heard, tasted, smelt or touched what you desire. The feelings that result from this vivid visualisation or as Mark Victor Hansen calls it, virtualization, are expressed through your heart.

And when these feelings are expressed they influence the surrounding field or matrix which realigns itself to create what you have envisioned in your mind. So your feelings are absolutely critical in the process of manifesting your goals and dreams. The more vividly you are able to imagine what you desire and evoke the feelings associated with what you desire the more easily you are able to manifest that which you desire.

If you only allow your senses to get emotively involved with what you can already physically detect in your outer environment then you will simply continue to reproduce what is already in your physical environment. To achieve something different you have to envision what you desire.

Think of it like constructing your ideal home. The more information you can give the architect who is going to draw the designs for your home the better. An excellent architect will be interested in a myriad of details that will help him to design a home that reflects both your needs and your wants.

During the construction of the house, first the foundation will be built and then the framework of the house. Your house will be built around this framework and the better the foundation and framework the more robust your house is going to be.

Preparing the framework of your ideal home can be likened to the work you do to program your mind for success and in mastering the state of coherence where your heart and mind work in harmony with each other. The framework can be likened to a quantum template that you construct when you emotively visualize your ideal home. The Universe aligns itself in such a way that it forms the image you have in your mind around this template so that what you have so vividly imagined on the inside is reflected on the outside.

Naturally, there are other things involved as well, such as taking inspired action but fundamentally your ability to manifest your ideal home will be in proportion to your ability to incorporate your emotions and feelings when you visualize your ideal home or any goal or dream.

To Achieve Success Be the Change You Want to See in the World

To achieve success in life in general or in a particular endeavour, people often aim to change their circumstances. However, in many cases, they are attempting to make these changes without changing themselves.

Mahatma Gandhi said:

"Be the change you want to see in the world."

This statement is rich in truth but, unfortunately, is all too often ignored.

It goes back to the NLP principle of cause and effect. If you accept 100% responsibility for your life and for the level of success you achieve in life then you are at cause. And, contrary to what many think, this is a very powerful place to be because it puts you in control. It puts you in a place where you can make a difference.

If you don't accept responsibility for your life then you are at effect and basically your belief is that you'll get what you want when everyone else changes. Now you know that is never going to happen. But just suppose for a moment that it was theoretically possible for you to change everyone else. Can you still see that practically it's an impossible task?

Dr Bruce Lipton, in talking about the early days of epigenetics said that when he realised that we had the power to alter the actual genetic make-up of our cells with our thoughts said he was so excited about the implications of this that he would tell anyone who paused long enough for him to share his findings. However, he noticed that, in particular, when he gave group presentations, that the reception he received was not as enthusiastic as he expected. Then, one day after one such presentation, someone made a remark to him that made him realise that the physical image he was presenting was not congruent with the message he was delivering.

As simplistic as it may seem, he had been so excited about sharing the results of his research that he didn't consider applying those results to his own life. In other words he had an intellectual rather than a practical understanding of what he was teaching. It was a big aha moment for him and once he started to actually apply what he knew to improve the quality of his life there was a huge shift in the way his message was received.

As Dr Joe Vitale, bestselling author of "Attract Money Now" said:

"Everything on the outside is an illusion. It looks very, very real - that's part of the hypnotic trance we're all in but in order to change it and change anybody else you don't change it or anybody else - you change the inside of you."

In other words, if you are striving to achieve success by changing your external world without doing the work on you, you are trying to change an illusion and that doesn't make sense. However, if you do the work on you, you'll become more aligned with your authentic self. Your perception will change and so too will your reality as you become more congruent with that which you desire.

Unfortunately, what happens in many cases is that people are very anxious for change to take place and they do a lot of actions geared towards directly changing their results. But, any positive change they achieve is fleeting. When you learn to do the necessary internal work your external circumstances will automatically start to shift for the better and with seemingly little effort on your part. And this includes how people around you behave as well.

So once you decide what it is that you want to accomplish, figure out who you'd have to be in order to achieve the success you desire and then work on your inner programming so that you become that person.

Problem-Solving and the Law of Thinking

Problem-solving is a very valuable skill and, as was once said, no problem can withstand sustained thinking.

Now the Law of Thinking fundamentally states that your predominant thought becomes your reality and this is where people fail when it comes to problem-solving. When faced with a problem, instead of thinking about potential solutions, all some people think about is the problem which simply exacerbates the problem. As Dan Sullivan said:

"The problem is never the problem. The problem is that you don't know how to think about the problem."

And so people often shy away from problems even to the extent that they don't set new goals or attempt new things in their lives because they are afraid of the obstacles they might encounter. However, if you change your perception you will realise that a problem is just an opportunity to grow for in order to solve a problem you have to elevate your thinking.

"You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it."
Albert Einstein

So how exactly do you raise your level of consciousness for effective problem-solving? There are actually lots of techniques you can use and the following case study will illustrate a few of these.

In January 2009, Captain Chesley Sullenberger safely made an emergency landing on the Hudson River when, moments after the US Airways plane he was flying left New York's LaGuardia airport, experienced double twin engine failure due to a suspected bird strike. Landing a stricken plane of this size safely on a regular runway would have been a challenge. The risks in this situation increased exponentially.

The angle and speed of approach had to be spot on to avoid the plane being destroyed on impact. If this had happened the likelihood of survival would have been slim to none. Yet, this pilot calmly managed to safely land his crippled plane on this runway of water saving the lives of 155 people.

A key factor in what the governor of New York, David Patterson, called "a miracle on the Hudson" was the pilot's experience. Captain Sullenberger has over 29 years' experience as a commercial pilot and is a former US airforce fighter pilot so he was practiced in being able to think calmly under pressure and would have completed many simulations of various emergency situations. However, I'm sure he never imagined he would find himself in such a predicament as he found himself with the ill-fated Airbus 320 where his ability to think clearly when potential disaster loomed around him was taxed to the max.

Another factor in this remarkable story was that once Captain Sullenberger made the decision to land the plane on the Hudson he knew exactly what he had to do to achieve a safe landing. In other words, even though he had to apply laser-like concentration, his thinking became almost automatic because he was following through a logical, sequence of steps that had been thought of before this event.

And Captain Sullenberger had to think fast. His plane was going down and with the rate at which the plane was losing altitude there was insufficient time to return to LaGuardia or make it to another airport. He had to assess the situation quickly and come up with the best solution to the dire problem he was faced with.

So my point is, whether it be your personal life or your business think of things that might go wrong. Now I'm not suggesting that you become morbid about this or even paranoid. It's about being prepared. Think of it as a game.

Once you've identified things that could possibly go wrong you can put into place action plans to counter these situations. Even if you're not in an immediate position to put these plans into action you can schedule them according to their severity. And, should the worst happen before you've implemented your plan at least you will know exactly what to do and you can focus immediately on implementing the solution to whatever problem befalls you rather than worrying about the problem itself.

Worry paralyses you whereas when you're able to take action regarding a problem you immediately feel a sense of relief because now your focus is on the successful resolution of the problem. In other words you're thinking about the solution.

Practice consciously and constructively to apply the Law of Thinking to your problems and your problem-solving skills will develop to such an extent that you'll even start to welcome problems as a means to demonstrate your prowess at problem-solving.

Mastering the Law of Thinking will certainly help you to overcome even the most challenging of problems and help you to consistently achieve success in life but it's just one of many laws. To learn how to master the other critical Universal Laws visit the 11 Forgotten Laws.

Goal Achievement - Hold Onto Your Vision and Your Dreams

My post "Money is Secondary When It Comes to Goal Setting" apparently struck a raw nerve with at least one person who submitted a comment which I mistakenly deleted. However, basically what the person said was that I should have prefaced the post with "In my opinion" and that because I didn't they didn't read the post.

First of all this is a blog and so, by definition, most of what is written here is my opinion. In addition to sharing resources and news about events I share my views on personal development issues. And while they may be my views I can back up what I write about.

I've decided to address the comment with another post because I know from coaching many clients and talking to people in general that a lot of people believe they shouldn't set goals for what they cannot currently afford or what they believe they never will be able to afford. And, if that is their belief this is will be their reality.

Now, on the other hand, if you have the money to do whatever it is you're seeking to achieve and you know how to go about achieving it then it really isn't a true goal. A goal is meant to stretch you. It's not the acquisition of the goal that is important. It's what you become as a result of going after your goal that counts. You'll find that once you achieve your goal you'll already be looking ahead for other peaks to climb.

I can give several examples from my own life of things I've achieved when at the outset I really didn't know how I was going to achieve them and I certainly didn't have the money. And I could write several volumes about individuals who had the courage to dream when they didn't initially have the financial resources to achieve their goal and still they succeeded. However, they would never have triumphed if they based their vision on their current circumstances.

So here is just one example.

When Monty Roberts was in High School his teacher asked the class to write about what they wanted to become when they grew up. Monty wrote that he wanted to own a 200-acre ranch and raise thoroughbred racehorses. His teacher awarded him with an F.

You see at the time Monty Roberts was living in a camper on the back of a pick-up truck. His teacher thought that he was being unrealistic. In fact, the teacher actually offered to re-grade his essay if he would re-write it. Monty refused. He refused to compromise on his vision.

Today he's an award-winning trainer of championship horses. He travels the world giving presentations to audiences ranging from those incarcerated in prison to executives in Fortune 500 companies.

He's also the author of the New York Times bestseller "The Man Who Listens to Horses" - a book which Queen Elizabeth II encouraged him to write. How about that for a royal command! And he's written several other best-sellers.

And as for that ranch he dreamt of owning. Well, that didn't quite work out. His "Flag Is Up Farms" ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley is a mere 154 acres.

This is just a snippet of Monty Robert's achievements. Just suppose he had listened to his teacher. I think his story may have unfolded differently.

I was watching the movie "The Opus" recently - a great movie by the way. It's about the story of a young man who pursues his dreams despite experiencing enormous challenges. Anyway, I learned something new about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Apparently, when he first attended college his father personally introduced him to the head of the college and begged him to teach his son how to dream. History has shown us that he learnt this particular lesson very well indeed.

"If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream."

The point I want to make is that it costs nothing to dream and to have a vision for a bigger, brighter future. And it's only by daring to have such dreams, regardless of the amount that dream will cost to execute and the amount of money that you may or may not have, that you'll live an enriched and fulfilled life.

And what if you don't actually achieve your dream? Remember this:

"Dreams are like stars...you may never touch them, but if you follow them they will lead you to your destiny."

Goal Achievement: To Achieve Your Goals You Need A Big Enough Why

Goal achievement is tough - make no doubt about it. As soon as you set yourself a challenging goal obstacles will present themselves. And, if you don't have a big enough why they will stop you dead in your tracks and you'll abandon your goal. However, if you have a big enough why the obstacles you face will not matter. You'll find a way to power past them.

For a great example of this let's go back to 1973 and an epic tennis match - Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King. This wasn't an epic match in the same vein as the Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer 2008 Wimbledon final in terms of the length of the match and the number of games played, etc. It was an epic match because of what it signified.

Back in the seventies there was a stark inequality between women's and men's tennis. Bobby Riggs was himself a tennis champion but he was also a self-proclaimed male chauvinist. He was of the view that women were the weaker sex and inferior athletes.

On Mother's Day in 1973 he added fuel to his claims by beating Margaret Court. Upon winning he immediately sought to claim another scalp by challenging the then 29 year old Billie Jean King to a match. Even though Bobby Riggs was 55 and at the end of his career he boasted that his masculinity gave him the advantage and that he would be able to vanquish Billie Jean King.

The build-up to this tennis match was reminiscent of the build-up to a boxing duel. The boasts of the challenger and the media hype were such that the match became known as "The Battle of the Sexes".

Billie Jean King was disgruntled by the fact that sportswomen were paid so poorly compared to their male counterparts. She accepted the match to prove that women were not the weaker sex. And, especially after Margaret Court's defeat, losing simply wasn't an option. It would have been disastrous for the women's rights movement. She said:

"I thought it would set us back 50 years if I didn't win that match. It would ruin the women's tour and affect all women's self esteem."

This was a match that captured the imagination of the country as well as tennis enthusiasts. The matched was played on 20 September at the Astrodome Court in Huston in front of a capacity crowd of 30,472 people - at that time the largest audience for a live tennis match. The match also received prime time coverage for an estimated 50 million viewers.

And viewers didn't just witness one of the most significant tennis matches of all time, they saw a grand spectacle as well. Billie Jean King was carried on a red velvet litter carried by hunky University of Houston football players in short togas. Bobby Riggs, on the other hand, as befitting his character, entered the stadium in a carriage pulled by women dressed in sexy outfits. However, once the pageantry was over it was down to business.

Bobby Riggs tried his best to fend off Billie Jean King but she won emphatically in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Riggs who thought he had both the mental and physical advantage was proved wrong on both counts:

"It was mainly a case of overconfidence on my part. I overestimated myself. I underestimated Billie Jean's ability to meet the pressure. I let her pick the surface and the ball because I figured it wouldn't make a difference, that she would beat herself."

And, it's ironic that despite Billie Jean King's many accomplishments (she won six Wimbledon singles championships, four U.S. Open titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world five years) she is perhaps best remembered for the manner in which she despatched Bobby Riggs.

On that September day back in 1973, she wasn't just playing for her own glory she was playing for women the world over.

Neil Amdur wrote in The New York Times:

"Most important perhaps for women everywhere, she convinced skeptics that a female athlete can survive pressure-filled situations and that men are as susceptible to nerves as women."

And with this victory Billie Jean King achieved another goal as well. In 1973, the US Open became the first major tournament to offer equal prize money for men and women.

So what's your why? What is it that will make you stretch and go beyond your former limits? Find that powerful why and you'll simply amaze yourself with the goals you're able to achieve.

Goal Setting: Money is Secondary When it Comes to Goal Setting

Many people set goals to do something once they have the money. This is entirely the wrong way to go about goal setting. You don't need the money for something until you decide to do it. Therefore, putting something off until you have the money means that you're highly unlikely to achieve that particular goal.

What many people fail to understand is that you don't need to know how you will get the money to do what you desire. Your job is to express your desire and start working towards achieving your goal. When you do this the Universe will recognise that you are committed to achieving your goal and will work to help bring manifest it.

"Follow your bliss and the Universe will open doors for you where there were only walls."
Joseph Campbell

In addition, when you wait until you have sufficient money for a certain endeavour you are actually cutting off sources of income that could potentially come your way. Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of "Simple Abundance" said:

"Whatever we are waiting for - peace of mind, contentment, grace, the inner awareness of simple abundance - it will surely come to us, but only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart."

While she didn't specifically mention money, know that this applies to money as well. And all too often we unconsciously repel money through our thoughts and actions.

Now, I'm not saying that you should not save money for your goal. For instance, suppose you want to take a vacation. Then decide when you would like to take the vacation and by all means start saving for it even if the amount you can put towards this goal is small. When the Universe puts the Law of Attraction to work opportunities and circumstances will come your way that you would not even have imagined possible. You just have to have faith that what you want is possible and that it can happen.

So, as well as saving what you can for your trip, otherwise prepare for it. Identify the things you will need for your trip and the steps you will need to take just before leaving. The Universe can work quite rapidly as well and you need to be ready to act when the opportunity arises.

If you need a passport for this particular trip, make sure your passport is up-to-date. If you need a visa, find out what you need to do to get one and have everything in order so that you can apply for a visa at a moment's notice if necessary.

Pack your suitcase. Yes, pack your suitcase. Generally, the things you travel with are not the things you use on a day-to-day basis. I keep a suitcase packed, including toiletries, so I can be ready to travel at short notice.

Also, don't be concerned that what you desire is not something you actually need. Life is not just about getting your needs met. How can anyone live a rich and fulfilling life that way? Both your needs and your wants are important. After getting your needs met, it is the journey you take in acquiring your wants that will further develop you as a person.

I read a story recently of how a young man had a burning desire to relocate to Hawaii. He was interviewed by a company that was expanding and needed someone to be based in Hawaii. He didn't get the position. It went instead to a colleague of his who he discovered didn't want to relocate and so he contacted the company.

As he suspected, his colleague had turned down the position. What's more the company was now desperate to have someone on location. He had been interviewed. He was qualified for the job and he was prepared to relocate.

"When can you start?" they asked.

"Immediately," he replied without a moment's hesitation and the next day he was on a plane to Hawaii.

I've used a trip as an example but this relates to anything. And I know of similar examples and you probably do too. These individuals are not lucky. They were prepared.

So remember, you don't need the money for your goal until you commit yourself to achieving your goal. So don't hold back in your goal setting. Decide what you want and then start taking steps to prepare yourself for acquisition of your goal no matter how absurd it may seem to others – not that you have to tell anybody.

Don't wait until you have the money, the money is secondary. Go after your goals!

And remember:

"If you make the unconditional commitment to reach your most important goals, if the strength of your decision is sufficient, you will find the way and the power to achieve your goals."
Robert Conklin

Positive Affirmations - Make Your Affirmations More Effective Using Subliminal Messages

While subliminals can be used to enhance the effectiveness of positive affirmations many people are wary of subliminal messages. Yet every day you are subjected to thousands of subliminal messages but, by definition, you're just not consciously aware of them.

When people think of subliminal messages people think of audio messages but subliminal messaging can be visual as well. For instance, it's estimated that we see over 3,000 adverts every day. But do you remember seeing so many adverts - of course not.

So the point is that you're being subjected to subliminal messages whether you are aware of it or not. Therefore, it makes sense to be proactive and deliberately use them to your advantage with respect to your positive affirmations.

The following example illustrates how we can be swayed by advertising messages and not even be aware of it.

Guerrilla Marketing Expert, Jay Conrad Levinson was once in a taxi with some of his advertising colleagues on his way to deliver a major presentation. From their excited conversation the taxi driver deduced that they worked in the advertising business and asked:

"Do you really believe that stuff works? Because I can tell you, it doesn't work for me. It never has and it never will. I've never bought anything as a result of marketing or advertising and never will."

Upon which, one of Jay Conrad Levinson's colleagues asked:

"Well, what kind of toothpaste do you use?"

"Oh, I brush with Gleam but it has nothing to do with the advertising. It's because I drive a cab and I can't brush after every meal."

Well, at that time the Gleam campaign theme was for people who can't brush after every meal. And, it wasn't just this taxi driver who fell under the spell of the Gleam advertising campaign. This particular advertising campaign was a big success for Gleam.

But there are lots of ways in which you can be unconsciously influenced by subliminal messages and the extent to which you are influenced by random subliminal messages is affected by your level of awareness and how you've programmed your own mind. Expressed another way, if you don't program your mind, you can be sure that someone else will.

So how can you use subliminal messages to help positively re-program your mind? In this instance, I'm going to limit my response to just audio subliminal messages. You can record your positive affirmations combine them with a suitable backing track allowing your positive affirmations to be played just below the threshold of normal hearing so that they effectively become subliminal.

And, because subliminal messages are programmed for the sub-conscious mind you can apply some interesting techniques to subliminal messages to further enhance their effectiveness. Here are three (3) examples:

1. Add compressed messages
2. Add reversed messages
3. Add stereo-confusion

Adding compressed messages simply means playing more of your positive affirmations in less time and to do this you "compress" the sound waves. And this has the effect of speeding up your subliminal messages. Similarly reversed messages are simply messages played in reverse. Now while they may be incomprehensible to the conscious mind, your sub-conscious is extremely powerful and can decipher these messages.

And actually, because of this you don't even have to play them at sub-audible level. However, as subliminal messages are generally programmed into a soundtrack it results in a more pleasant sound to play them at a low level.

Stereo-confusion refers to a technique where messages are played in such a manner that you hear distinct messages in your right and left ear. This has the effect of separately targeting the left and right hemispheres of your brain. For maximum effectiveness you obviously need to listen to these messages using headphones.

So you can apply these techniques to your positive affirmations and create soundtracks that you can listen to on a regular basis. Despite this, the practice of saying positive affirmations is still important because this is when you can visualize your affirmations and use your feelings and emotions to enhance their effectiveness.

However, when you apply these subliminal techniques to your positive affirmations it makes the practice of your affirmations effortless and, depending on the type of soundtrack you use, you can play your subliminal messages in the background at regular intervals during the day.

Successful People - 3 Traits of Highly Successful People

Successful people may achieve their success by different means but they share certain common traits that set them apart.

And, once you know the characteristics of highly successful individuals you can develop the same traits in yourself and, in so doing, start to increase the level of success you achieve in your own life.

So here are 3 traits of highly successful people:

1. They are very energetic.

Take Bob Proctor for example. He recently celebrated his 75th birthday. Yet he is as active as ever - teaching, coaching, mentoring, organising personal development cruises, conducting seminars, creating new products and the list simply goes on and on. What he manages to accomplish in a day would exhaust many people half his age. He is an avid believer of the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote:

"Do the thing and you will get the energy to do the thing."

And he certainly lives this. Another, person who symbolises energy is Sir Richard Branson. From Virgin Health Bank to Virgin Galactic he tirelessly promotes his many businesses and causes that he supports. He is the face of Virgin and he epitomises the Virgin Brand.

However, Sir Richard Branson is more than an entrepreneur. In addition to his numerous and diverse business ventures he's an adventurer as well. For instance, he has set various records for crossing the Atlantic and the Pacific in a hot air balloon.

There are some people who want to be successful but they are just so lethargic. They way they move, they way they speak and their input into whatever they do all lack energy. They'll never achieve major success like this.

2. They have a need to contribute.

Successful people become wealthy because of their fervent desire to make a difference. So the business they enter and the manner in which they conduct business both lend themselves to the idea of contribution to society.

And these individuals generally grow up with the value of giving back to society instilled in them and so tithing is natural to them. In other words, they don't wait until they're wealthy to start giving back to society. It's something that they've always done and the wealthier they become the more they give.

In 2006, Warren Buffett announced that he would be donating 85% of his Berkshire Hathaway fortune which at the time was valued at over $40 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Ironically, Bill Gates said that it was Warren Buffett who "inspired" their thinking about philanthropy. The Foundation is the largest in the world even before the Buffett's generous gift.

You may think that it's easy for someone as wealthy as Warren Buffett to make donations to charity but this is something he has been doing for years. He set up the Buffet Foundation (now the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation) back in the 1960s when he was on a salary of about $50,000 a year.

3. They make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly.

Successful people have complete clarity about what they want and this is one of the factors that empowers them to make decisions quickly. They also know what they don't want. In addition, they know the importance of taking action to achieve success and the thing is, you cannot take action on something until you make a decision.

So they make speedy decisions and so that they can quickly take action. Take Internet Marketer Russell Brunson. Russell Brunson recently made the decision to take up wrestling again and train for the 2012 London Olympic Games. This meant semi-retiring from his multi-million Internet Marketing business - a big decision in of itself.

However, once he made that decision he quickly hired one of the world's best Greco-Roman wrestling coaches, bought a building which he could convert into a gym for himself and others to train, and offered World Bronze Medallist Justin Ruiz what was effectively a training scholarship to become his training partner.

Now clearly it helped that Russell Brunson had the financial resources to implement these actions but it's the mindset of being decisive that has helped him to achieve the level of success he has accomplished. And, by being so decisive he also effectively cut off any avenues that would allow him to backtrack on his decision.

You too can adopt these traits and reap the reward of achieving greater success in life.

Saying Daily Positive Affirmations Just Doesn't Work

Personal Development experts recommend you use daily positive affirmations to help you achieve the success you seek and achieve your goals. But, so often I hear:

"Positive affirmations just don't work. I've been saying positive affirmations for ages and nothing's changed. In fact, things have become worse."

In "The Science of Getting Rich", Wallace D Wattles said in relation to his theory that:

"Furthermore, if every person who does what I tell him to do gets rich, this is positive proof until someone goes through the process and fails."

The same can be said of using positive affirmations. There's an effective way to practice them and this method works without fail. If you are not achieving successful results with affirmations you need to examine the affirmations that you are using and the manner in which you are practicing them.

Remember,

"You become what you think about."
Napoleon Hill

So if you're saying positive affirmations and your life is getting worse, guess what you're thinking about? You are thinking negative thoughts. Your outer world reflects your inner world not just sometimes - all the time.

But there can be another problem. The so-called positive affirmations that you repeat to yourself may not even be positive. So many times I've read affirmations which are not constructed properly.

A common fault is to express your affirmation in the negative such as:

"I will not waste time."

Your sub-conscious mind does not process negatives. So to your sub-conscious mind the above statement comes across as:

"I will waste time."

And there's more. In addition to being written in the negative this statement has another strike against it which disqualifies it as a positive affirmation. Someone who says this to themselves is likely to be someone who wants to be more productive and use their time more efficiently. But this statement focuses on what they don't want to do - waste time. Yet, they repeat this statement to themselves over and over to themselves and expect positive change.

A more appropriate affirmation would be:

"I invest my time wisely."

People often make reference to how they "spend" their time but as Adam Urbanski pointed out, when you use time you are literally using up part of your live and so if you regard it as an investment you are more likely to give greater consideration to how you use your time. In whatever manner you choose to use your time, you are giving up part of your life for it.

In the movie "The Secret", Bob Proctor gives another example of how people's affirmations, this time with respect to money can keep them bound. He said that many people want to attract more money but they are focusing on debt.

"I don't care if it's get in or get out of debt. If you're thinking of debt, that’s what you're going to attract."
Bob Proctor

So in this case your affirmations could be about wanting to achieve financial freedom or achieve financial independence. Remember an affirmation is simply something that you affirm to yourself. It can be true. It can be false. It can be positive or negative.

And they're numerous other ways in which people can unwittingly make errors when constructing their affirmations. So have your affirmations checked by a coach or NLP Practitioner or someone else who truly understands affirmations, the power of words and the hidden meaning within what you say. In this way you can be certain that your daily positive affirmations actually have a chance of working for you rather than against you to help you achieve success.

Achieving Success - Build a Clear Vision Vision If You Want to Achieve Your Goals

Achieving success in life should be easy. After all, your brain is perhaps the most advanced goal-seeking device that exists. It's literally hard-wired for success. And therein lies the problem and solution to achieve your goals.

Because your brain is so adept at goal achievement it will seek to achieve any target you set it. Unfortunately, many people are unwittingly pursuing the wrong target or goal and one common instance when this occurs is when you do not have a clear vision of what it is you're trying to achieve.

When you don't have a clear vision of your goal it's like trying to complete a complex jigsaw puzzle without a picture of the end result. Imagine having hundred of puzzle pieces, many of them looking very similar and no reference as to how to assemble these pieces. To make matters worse, the jigsaw puzzle pieces you've been given actually consist of more than one puzzle. How on earth are you going to be able to distinguish the puzzle pieces that are relevant to your particular puzzle?

Well that's the challenge we face in life and as Business Optimization Strategist Stephen Pierce said,

"It's very difficult to understand where a bunch of random elements and chunks of information fit if you don't understand what the big picture looks like."

Because what happens when you set a goal is that the Universe responds and starts to present opportunities, people and resources that will help you to achieve your goal. Some of these may seem very obvious but others may be more subtle and may the last thing you'd expect would actually help you in achieving success. For instance, some of these opportunities will be disguised as frustration, rejection and failure.

Take for example, the former School Teacher turned Internet Marketer Lee McIntyre. Before turning Internet Marketer he said he once applied for a promotion at the school he was teaching and that he believed that he was ideally suited to but he wasn't selected. That really riled him. He quit his job, decided to become self-employed and committed himself to achieving massive success. He wanted to show his former employer the stuff he was truly made of.

He is now a very successful Internet Marketer working from home. He still teaches but now he teaches others how they can make money online and achieve financial independence as he has. Now suppose Lee McIntyre had got that promotion. He would be in a 9-5 job where his salary would basically be capped. As an Internet Marketer Lee McIntyre has refined his way of working so that he can scale what he does and so earn more as and when he chooses to do so. The rejection he received was a blessing rather than a curse.

But here's the thing. If you do not have a clear vision of what your future looks like then the Universe will respond in an equally vague manner. Say you've set a goal regarding the lifestyle you want to live then these are some of the questions you should be able to clearly answer regarding the accomplishment of your goal:

~ How much money will you be earning?
~ How will you earn your money?
~ Where will you be living?
~ What type of home will you be living in?
~ Who will you be living with?
~ How will you spend your leisure time?
~ What Charities will you be supporting?

Knowing the answers to these and other questions that you will come up with pertinent to the goals you're aiming to achieve will really help you to refine your vision as well as help you to identify the people, tools and resources that you will need in order to achieve your goals.

When your vision is really clear then despite the jumble of jigsaw pieces that are presented to you, the pieces that are relevant to you will somehow stand out. If you do not get clear about your vision you'll simply perish and all the while the opportunities you seek to achieve success could be hidden in plain view.

A great way for you to really focus on what you want, clarify your vision and accelerate your path to success is with a challenge. And the 100-Day Challenge is just perfect for this. Achieving Success - How the Success You Achieve in Life is Affected by Your Beliefs

Achieving success should be easy after all you've probably heard a hundred times if not more that people have infinite potential. Yet all around you are people are not living up to their potential and not achieving the level of success they desire in life.

Take the example of what happens when people buy courses, attend seminars and buy even more courses. Very often they do nothing with the material they purchased. Sometimes the packages don't even get opened.

Now they had every good intention to put the material to use. When they bought the program or course they were sold on the idea of how they could achieve success and transform their life. So what happened?

What happened is that they lost their belief that they could successfully make the program work for them. They decided to settle for what they had in life instead of going after what they could achieve.

You see their core belief was not congruent with the belief they could be successful. Your core beliefs are programmed into your sub-conscious mind and therefore dictate the actions that you take. And the actions you take will determine the results you achieve.

So, if a person fundamentally does not believe that by working through the program they can achieve the results they desire they simply will not take action. And, if they do, they'll self-sabotage their efforts so that things remain just the way they were - well almost.

You see you're either growing or dying. And, the only way you can grown mentally, spiritually and emotionally is for you to strive towards your goals. Continually self-sabotaging your goals by either taking minimal action on a project or starting a project and then stopping before completing it is utterly soul-destroying.

Fundamentally, the potential that we're able to liberate is dependent upon our beliefs because our beliefs drive the actions that we take which affect the results that we achieve.

Now there is a minority of individuals who actually follow through when they buy course and or attend training programmes. And these individuals provided they complete whatever program they've chosen to take action on, achieve results and often staggering results. So what the difference between those who follow through and those who don't?

"We're more afraid of what life would be like if we didn't follow through than the person who is willing to settle for what they've got and kind of hope it will change and purchase something for the moment and not follow through with it."
Tony Robbins

Another factor that influences whether or not a person takes action or not is their level of desperation. Many times, when a person does take action and follow through, they've hit rock bottom. They're in a position where they'd do almost anything to climb out of the pit they're in.

Often, it's a case that whatever it is they're doing just has to work because the consequences of it not are just too awful to contemplate so failure is not an option. And therein lies what Tony Robbins describes as the holy grail between someone taking action or not - CERTAINTY.

"When you're absolutely certain that if I do this it's going to get that result and that result is going to change my life - you'll do it. When you think it absolutely won't work you're never going to do it. The middle no man's land of maybe it'll work, maybe it won't - that's the piece that kills people."
Tony Robbins

So the question is how do you create certainty when the world isn't giving it to you? If you've got a negative balance on your bank account, you're receiving final demands in the mail and you're struggling to keep the roof over your head how do you create certainty?

The answer goes back to your belief systems.

"You have to believe it in your mind and then you'll take the necessary action to create the results that you desire."
Tony Robbins

And you not only have to believe it you have to clearly see your end result. As Mark Victor Hansen said,

"When you can see the invisible, you can do the impossible now."

So, when your beliefs are such that you can clearly see your goal and can hold this vision fixed in your mind you'll take the action steps necessary to achieve the results you desire and your latent potential will shine.

Achieving Success - How to Stay Focused on Just One Opportunity

One of the keys to achieving success is focus and in particular staying focused on just one particular opportunity until it works.

However, maintaining your focus, especially in today's environment, is a real challenge. If you're like the average person you are no doubt literally inundated with opportunities every single day. It's like being a kid in a candy store. When faced with so many tantalising opportunities it's so easy to flit from one thing to another. The problem with this approach is that you find that time months and maybe even years elapse and there's no evidence of real progress.

So just how do you stay focused on one and only one opportunity? Here are 5 tips to achieve this goal:

1. Know Your Why

First of all you need to define your why. In other words what's your end goal? What do you want to accomplish? And why do you want to accomplish this particular goal? You must have a very powerful why. It must be absolutely clear in your mind and remain the centre of your focus as you carry out your daily activities.

Pain is a strong motivator. So your why should be such that not achieving your goal will be particularly painful. And your desire to avoid this pain will be powerful enough to help you break through any fears you may have regarding achieving success in your chosen endeavor.

2. Identify Your Strengths

Knowing and playing to your strengths is vital component in goal achievement. When you play to your strengths you maximize your chances of success and you also achieve success faster and easier. And success breeds success. The other consideration with playing to your strengths is that certain opportunities will be an excellent complement to your strengths and others will not. The later situation could be a clear case of an opportunity you should perhaps forego.

3. Establish Clear Criteria for Assessing Opportunities

Now while generally you should focus on one opportunity and be successful at that before moving on to another there will be opportunities that come along that will compliment and enhance what you're currently doing. So it's useful to develop a checklist to help you assess opportunities that come your way. This will give you a systematic, objective, no-sense approach to of dealing with the multitude of opportunities that cross your path.

4. Identify Your Key Mentors and Coaches

There's a wealth of great information out there and there's also a lot of information that's of poor quality, outdated and inaccurate. Fortunately, once you've been around for a while you discover who you can trust. So it's important to establish a core group of individuals who you know you can definitely trust. Once you've done this, to further improve your focus, unsubscribe from all other mailing lists so that you don't get distracted. You can re-subscribe later on once you've achieving success becomes a habit rather than simply trying out new ideas.

5. Have an Accountability Partner

Having an accountability partner can be a huge benefit. This person needs to be tough and someone who will not tolerate your excuses. Remember, though that you can negotiate exactly what you want to be held accountable for. It can often be an added advantage if that person is accountable to you as well as this can give that added incentive for you both to carry out what you agree to do by maintaining your focus on just one opportunity.

Once you achieved success in one area you'll find it easy to duplicate that success in either the same area or perhaps a different area.

Another way to stay focused on just one opportunity is to have a challenge and a deadline to heighten your competitive spirit and motivate you to pull the stops out to achieve your goals and achieve massive success. Achieving Success - The Importance of Continuing Learning

Continuing learning is imperative if you want to achieve significant success in your life and continue achieving success.

What's more, you should learn from a broad range of sources, although not so broad that your learning lacks focus, but broad enough to properly expand your level of consciousness, develop your awareness and challenge your current thinking.

If you've old espionage movies then you're probably seen movies about sleeper agents. In such movies the sleeper agent may be 'awakened' through hearing a special code that has been programmed deep into his sub-conscious mind. In many cases the sleeper agent doesn't even remember that they are effectively a strategically placed spy working deep under cover. It's as though they're in a deep trance.

Often they've built up a comfortable life. They have a family. They positively contribute to their community and they lead pretty contented lives and then one day they receive this code and the illusion that has been their life is shattered.

They may be asked to do some dastardly deed or maybe even assassinate someone. The rest of the movie then shows the physical, mental and emotional struggle they endure as they try to retain the status quo and re-assemble their lives.

Like the sleeper agent, best-selling author Dr Joe Vitale suggests that we're all in a deep trance:

"We are all in a state of hypnosis. We think that we are such and such in life and all it means is we have put ourselves into a programmed state that says - this is the way you are in life."

And so, as you continue with your learning, there will come a point when you hear a word, a phrase, a sentence or you may see something and suddenly you experience a quantum leap in your awareness. You'll understand and see your life as well as life in general in a manner hitherto unimagined.

The sleeper awakes.

And the analogy between you and the fictional sleeper doesn't stop there. You've got that new-found awareness and you're ready to transform your life. You want to transform your life and start achieving a greater level of success but the manner in which your sub-conscious mind reacts you'd think you wanted to slip someone a cyanide pill.

You see, your sub-conscious mind resists change. Its role is to keep the status quo.

But, if you persist with your personal development and, in particular, incorporate neural re-conditioning techniques into your program then gradually your sub-conscious mind will succumb. Your life will start to flow more fluidly and achieving success will be easier than ever before.

However, it doesn't stop there because again, as you continue your learning, you'll be exposed to another 'code' and the whole process starts again.

The good thing is that it is that you'll soon recognize the pattern and when this happens you won't be flummoxed. You'll recognize that it is a process you have to go through as part of your intellectual, mental and spiritual growth that will lead to you creating a more fulfilling and successful life.

And, when you experience resistance you'll be able to dip into your ever expanding toolbox and select the techniques and strategies that best support you during the process of achieving success and achieving your ideal lifestyle.

The Law of Attraction and Goal Achievement - I've Set My Goals So Where's My Stuff?

Many people are of the view that the way the Law of Attraction and the process of goal achievement works is that you simply set an intention and what you desire comes to you.

Okay, some folk go further and they create their vision boards, practice positive affirmations, and take action towards achieving their goal but when the date by which they've asked for their "stuff" to arrive comes and goes without any clear evidence of their stuff they are left wondering -

"Where's my stuff?"

And, you know, there are a multitude of answers to this question. So I'm just going to explore one possible answer.

First of all it has been said many times and in many ways that you are not given a true desire for something without being given the ability to bring that desire into fruition. It's also said that the Universe always delivers.

Have you ever submitted a request to a radio station for the DJ to play a special song? If you have, you probably remember waiting somewhat anxiously to hear that song. And you probably also recall the excitement you felt when you heard that special song. Now you probably think I'm going to say that goals setting and achievement works in a similar way - not quite.

You see, the moment you submitted your request it was granted. In other words the music began playing. It was just that that your ear was not tuned to it and if what you requested was something really big then the music was very faint.

Stephen Pierce said that:

"Possession is nine tenths of the law but possession with respect to your mindset."

Or as Mark Victor Hansen puts it:

"Your state of mind creates your state of results."

Your role in the Law of Attraction process to achieve your goal is to move into alignment with your goal. You have to tune into the music. What you desire may be right under your nose but you're just not seeing it. It's like having a radio on but all you can hear is static. Or, it's like wearing glasses with the wrong type of lenses so that everything is completely out of focus. You have to tune into the right frequency on the radio or you have to keep changing the lenses of your glasses until you find the right frequency and or the right lens.

So the question is how do you align yourself with what you want? Richard Bach said,

"You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however."

When you set your goal your voice of intuition will speak to you, suggesting that you do something. Sometimes, it may not even make sense to you - do it. I'm not suggesting that you do anything reckless or dangerous - with practice you'll learn to recognize your voice of intuition and you'll know that it's a voice you can trust.

You see, your intuition is connected to the Universe at large and therefore knows things that you will not consciously know. It 'sees' the bigger picture whereas you can only act in the here and now. And this is why it's important to take action when your intuitive voice speaks because the Universe likes speed.

When you do this you'll automatically move closer to your goal and people, resources and opportunities will be drawn to you even though you still may not be able to actually see your end result. You still have to believe that what you desire is possible because if you don't the Law of Attraction will still work but this time it will bring to you what you don't want. So remember:

"Believe and your belief will create the fact."
William James

Now if you're still not seeing your stuff, it could be that you haven't allowed a sufficient gestation period. However, if you know in your heart that it should have been possible for you to achieve your goal within the time you allotted it and you've been diligently working towards achieving your goal, it could be that it has been delivered but you're still not seeing it.

So try looking at your situation from a new perspective. This may reveal your goal to you. What you desire it not necessarily going to come hand-delivered with a bright red bow wrapped around it. Also share your dilemma with others they may be able to see what you're missing.

The Law of Attraction is just one many Universal Laws that you need to work in harmony with to achieve your goals and dreams. To discover the 11 Forgotten Laws that you also need to master to become a truly unstoppable force visit:

Success Strategy - Learn to Think Outside the Box

Thinking outside the box is a success strategy used by anyone who has achieved phenomenal success. Outstanding success is certainly not achieved through conventional thinking or even through following conventional wisdom as the following story will illustrate.

Bill Bartmann sat at his kitchen table across from his wife Kathy. It was one of the toughest moments of his life. He was bankrupt, owed $1 million dollars to his bank and what little money he did have for basic living expenses was fast running out.

He was considering sending Kathy and his two daughters to live with his in-laws. He felt humiliated. But Kathy had been with Bill since she was just 11 years old and he was 14. They had been through tough times together as well as great times but they had always faced challenges together.

Despite the gravity of their situation she wasn't about to leave. They had taken a lot of knocks yet she was ready to go yet another round. But she also realised that they had to do something radically different. They had to change their mindset to dig themselves out of the deep hole they were currently in.

So, instead of Kathy packing her bags, she and Bill sat at the kitchen table thinking about what they could do to reverse the dire situation they found themselves in. Bill flicked through the local newspaper looking for opportunities. He didn't see anything he considered viable but he did notice a 2" x 2" ad by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) offering to sell bad loans.

Bill thought the idea was preposterous:

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Who in their right mind would spend good money to buy bad loans?"

He threw the newspaper away.

The next day as he scanned the newspaper he again noticed the ad by the FDIC. A seed of an idea was beginning to germinate in his mind but he rejected it and again threw away the newspaper.

On the third day though, that idea was starting to grow roots. And, as Victor Hugo said,

"There's nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come."

He turned to Kathy and said that maybe the people with bad loans were just like them - good people who had fallen on hard times. And that what they needed was a little time to get back on their feet.

He reasoned that if someone could hold onto these loans until the defaulters were in a position to pay that they could make a tidy profit, provided they bought the loans at the right price. And there, in essence, was his business plan for his new business - debt collection.

The thing is, this opportunity always existed but Bartmann had never seen it before because he was focused on other matters. It took a calamity in his life for him to alter his mindset and to start thinking way outside the box. In addition, it was also necessary for him to shift from feeling sorry for himself to start thinking what he could do to improve his circumstances.

In other words, he started asking himself more powerful questions? But powerful questions, far less answers, don't come to you when you're in a state of denial about your situation.

In every adversity there is an opportunity but,

"Sometimes you have to stare adversity right in the eye to see the opportunity."
Bill Bartmann

So the next question was how they would buy these bad loans. After all, they had no money. Kathy suggested that they approach the bank that they owed a million dollars to.

Sounds like a crazy idea but that's exactly what the Bartmanns did.

The bank loaned him $13,000 and Bartmann bought his first box of bad loans. In two months they collected $63,000 and, in accordance with the agreement they had arranged with their bank, they paid off the $13,000 loan, kept $10,000 for living expenses and paid $40,000 towards clearing their million dollar debt.

The next day it was the bank that contacted them. We'd like you to buy more bad loans they told him. This time they loaned him $100,000 and Bill Bartmann bought a bigger box of bad loans. And that's how Commercial Financial Services (CFS) got started.

They paid off their entire debt to the bank within 3 years and over the next 12 years built a business with a revenue of $3.5 billion and a staff of 3,900.

You see sometimes incremental thinking just doesn't cut it. Bill Bartmann is the only person to have gone from bankruptcy to billionaire status. Sometimes you have to think exponentially if you want to achieve dramatic success.

"You really need to get way outside that box and think bigger than you've ever thought before."
Bill Bartmann

And to demonstrate just how much, at the time, Bill Bartmann was thinking outside the box - he was the only person to respond to that original FDIC advert.

Bill Bartmann recently published a new book called "Bailout Riches:How Everyday Investors Can Make a Fortune Buying Bad Loans for Pennies on the Dollar". And you can purchase a copy of this book at the link below:

Positive Affirmations and the Power of Your Words

You use positive affirmations to help you to achieve your goals. And fundamentally, positive affirmations are just words but it is the way in which you combine those words and the actual words that you use in creating your affirmations that mean the difference between succeeding in achieving your goals or failing.

The words you use, both spoken and unspoken, literally control the results you achieve in your life. As Bill Bartmann said:

"The words that we use to describe the thing we want predicates more often than not our own success or own failure."

Yet, far too many people do not pay attention to the words they use to describe themselves far less the words they use to describe what they desire. In many cases the words that people use to describe themselves are often negative and erode their self-esteem making it even more challenging to achieve the results that they desire. As Gloria Steinem said:

"Self-esteem isn't everything; it's just that there's nothing without it."

They then compound matters by describing what they want as a goal. Now some individuals are very clear about what a goal is and what the term goal means to them. They are also very confident about achieving the goals that they set. However, there are others to whom the word goal actually has negative connotations.

To this group of individuals a goal is something which is generally beyond their reach. It's something they aspire to but deep down inside they do not expect to achieve it. So they set a goal and they fulfil their prophecy that they will not achieve it. In other words they self-sabotage their attempts to accomplish their goal. It then becomes one more on a long list of goals set but not achieved.

So the next time they set a goal their sub-conscious mind checks their personal history of goal setting and goal achievement, sees that the norm is that majority of goals set are not achieved and so again sabotages the individual's effort to achieve this new goal as well. A pattern is established and failing to achieve your goals becomes a habit because the sub-conscious mind resists change. It doesn't like to upset the status quo.

Maybe this has happened to you and if not to you personally, you can probably think of someone to whom this happens time and time again. They set goals and are very enthusiastic for a while but before long the goal is abandoned. They don't even go the distance in their attempt to achieve their goal. Or they repeatedly lament about the number of projects they start but don't finish.

If you do fall into this category and you're using positive affirmations with respect to "goals" you're aiming to achieve then it's likely that you will be disappointed.

There are several different ways to overcome this problem. Bill Bartmann suggests that instead of setting goals you make a promise. Now, admittedly, some people are just as bad at keeping their promises but, generally, when someone makes a promise it is a serious commitment. To some individuals a promise is almost sacred. They would rather die than break a promise.

If you fall into this latter category then you know that when you make a promise that:

1. You don't do so lightly, and

2. You do everything in your power to fulfil your promise.

As a result, you know and those close to you know that even if you don't fulfil your promise that you would have done all that you could to carry out your promise and that nothing more could realistically be asked of you. However, because you pull the stops out when you do make a promise your track record for fulfilling your promises is high.

Thus, when your sub-conscious mind learns that you've made a new promise. It sends out the red alert. And it starts to work flat out, working with you rather than against you, to help you achieve your goal and manifest your promise or positive affirmation.
