Finding Your Purpose in Life

Many people spend a lot of time, even years, soul-searching and agonising over what their purpose is in life. We can over-complicate things.

Sometimes the answer we seek is right in front of us as clear as day. Yet for some reason our brain cannot see it. I say our "brain" because it is the brain which interprets the images that we view. We can 'overlook' something simply because we don't have the ability to process the information that we are receiving through our eyes or because we have not alerted our reticular activating system as to what we should be focusing on.

I recall someone being asked what they enjoy doing and they had no answer. He was just living life day-to-day without paying any attention to the things that particularly gave him joy.

In other cases, we may know what we enjoy doing and what we would like to do with our lives but we put those activities and, effectively, our lives on hold because we are fearful of the process and even the outcome.

Eric Jong said:

"Everyone has a talent; but rare is the courage to follow the talent to the places it leads."

In other words, there are things that we are all naturally good at. We merely have to make the decision to develop a particular talent. However, many people are extremely poor decision-makers. And, as a result, instead of getting ahead in life they often remain stuck.

So, if you are one of the many who wonders about and questions your purpose in life consider this approach instead.

Simply decide what you want to do with your life and create your life accordingly. Then you can stop agonising about your life's purpose and fully commit yourself to living life on purpose.

It sounds far too easy doesn't it? Yet so often we needlessly complicate things. What if living your life on purpose was indeed as simple as choosing a direction in life and then fully committing to it.

Otherwise, we're like a pilot in a plane which is fuelled and ready for take off except we're still busy deciding on our destination. What's more if we don't take off we'll lose our window of opportunity. You can be a success if you commit yourself to being successful.

Take Victor Rubilar for example. Rubilar juggles balls - footballs. On the surface that may not sound very exciting but Rubilar travels all over Europe and the Middle East and indeed the world performing his freestyle football skills. And, in 2006 he broke three Guinness World Records in a single day.

Can you imagine the resistance he experienced when he was growing up? After all, performing tricks with footballs is not a common way to earn a living. But this was his passion and, in addition to spending years practicing his football tricks he also attended performer the National Swedish School of Contemporary Arts to train as a performer.

Today, in addition to the records he has set; Rubilar's freestyle skills have been used by major brands as Puma, Adidas, Coca Cola and Ikea. He has performed in front of hundreds and even thousands of individuals.

This is Rubilar's purpose in life. This is what he loves doing and he made a decision early on in his life to develop this talent and see where it took him. When he started out he probably didn't have a vision as to how big this would become. He was just doing what he loved doing. He probably had some doubts as well about how he could pursue his passion and earn a living at the same time but he has achieved this.

When you decide what you want to devote your life to you can then put your energy into fully developing that particular idea. However, until you decide what your purpose is in life you will lack focus and direction.

Think of people at the top of their 'game', people who you consider to be living their life on purpose - individuals such as Bill Gates, Oprah, Tiger Woods, Richard Branson and the late Anita Roddick. You'll find that generally, they all have something in common. They decided on a 'career' path and then dived headlong into making it a success. They knew how they wanted to spend their time and their lives.

And this is the challenge, because whatever you decide to do you will be trading your life for it and so you have to choose wisely. However, as Keith Cunningham said:

"The decision that you've been delaying is the thing that is keeping you small. It is the decision that is preventing you from becoming the person you should become."

So decide what it is you want to do with your life. Start living your life with passion and on purpose.

Gratitude - Being Thankful Even During Challenging Times

At times, especially if you're experiencing challenges in your life, it can be difficult to express your gratitude.

And many individuals are going through a particularly challenging time at the moment. It's easy to say that this is as a result of the economic downturn but, in reality, the economic downturn is not the true cause of so many people's problems.

The writing was on the wall that this downswing in the economy was going to take place but few people, including myself, fully examined what the potential effects would be on a global, national, local and even personal level. So people have been largely unprepared for the swiftness of some of the repercussions of the current financial meltdown.

Hence, at a time when many people are celebrating Thanksgiving others are rueful about the losses they have recently suffered. And the reality is that while many people will spend this holiday season celebrating with friends and family and eating lavish meals, for others Thanksgiving will be a more sobering affair.

It is at times like these that your faith can be sorely tested and it's important to remember that:

"If your faith is in all-sufficiency of supply, then so is your life. If your faith is pulsating to a 'just getting by' frequency, then so it is in the world. If your faith is on the dial-set of insufficiency, then there will never be enough to meet your needs. Your world simply reflects your faith."
John Randolph Price, The Abundance Book

You have to face squarely that no matter how your life at this time. You created your life. Also, no matter what's happening in your life right now you have much to be thankful for and the more you express you gratitude, the more you will have to be thankful for.

As Oprah said:

"If you look at what you have in life, you'll always have more. If you look at what you don't have in life, you'll never have enough."

Many people are seeing the glass as half-empty at the moment instead of half-full. And so they are complaining about what they lack. Consequently they are attracting more of the same into their lives. Gratitude keeps you connected with the things you want in life. The more you recognise the blessings you have in this life, no matter how small they may appear to you, the more you will attract more of what you truly desire in your life. Now, more than ever it's time to see that your glass is half-full rather than half-empty.

It may be the view of an optimist but as Keith Cunningham said:

"OPTIMISM is the mother of PERSISTENCE.
BELIEF is the mother of OPTIMISM.
GRATITUDE is the mother of BELIEF."

So be grateful for the life that you lead and believe that you can create the life you desire.

The Art of Mastery: Flow vs Resistance

On Sunday I used public transport to travel to the venue where Christopher Howard's "Ultimate Business Success Seminar" was being held. This was a superb event featuring several world-class speakers including Loral Langemeier, Keith Cunningham, Simon Coulson, Jeremy Hudson and Paul Avins.

However, back to my journey…

My journey involved several changes yet at no time did I have to wait any longer than a minute for a bus or train. Each time I got off a train I found myself directly opposite the exit I needed. I know some stations well enough that I can work out the best carriage to travel in for the quickest escape route. But this was all without any special effort on my part. For this journey, I was in flow.

Needless to say I arrived at my destination in record time. In addition, because of the effortless and pleasant nature of my journey, I felt quite relaxed and in an excellent frame of mind. It was a great way to start the day.

At times in our lives, we all experience flow where what we are doing seems effortless even though it may require great skill and be very challenging. However, for many, finding flow is a hit and miss affair rather than something creatively designed.

Instead, many feel enormous resistance when they are involved in certain activities. In some cases it's because they are doing the wrong activity. They are doing something that they are not good at doing, weren't meant to do and don't need to do.

For others it's because they are going about doing things the wrong way and as a result they create enormous friction, stress and discomfort in their lives. What's more, they persist in doing this particular activity in the same manner day after day. They feel miserable. They lose their joie de vivre and yet don't recognise that it's not the activity or even the people they're interacting with that need to change. It's themselves.

They need to learn how to adapt themselves to their environment rather than constantly battle against it.

"Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."
Bruce Lee

Too many people expend far too much energy doing things in the wrong way. If they took the time to learn how to do things in the right manner then they would find that these tasks become much easier. Yet, when you suggest and even demonstrate to some folk just how they could be doing things that would make their lives so much easier they say:

"It's too hard."

Finding your flow is not instantaneous. It requires an investment of time to discover the best way to achieve something and practice, practice, practice. It requires initially that you push yourself a lot but eventually you won't need to push yourself that hard at all until you decide to step up to another level because you will have achieved mastery.

"Ah, mastery...what a profoundly satisfying feeling when one finally gets on top of a new set of skills...and then sees the light under the new door those skills can open, even as another door is closing."
Gail Sheehy

And isn't the achievement of mastery what being in flow is really all about?

Starting or Building a Business? Why You Should Use Teleseminars as Part of Your Marketing Strategy

The news is full of reports about companies downsizing and laying off staff. These persistent reports may cause you to think that now, during an economic downturn, is just about the worse time to get into business.

If you think so you're right. Remember the words of Henry Ford:

"If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right."
Henry Ford

And you're also wrong. There will be many entrepreneurs and business owners who will become even wealthier during this recession. Some will be in a position to take advantage of low-cost acquisitions and others just because they decided to structure their business differently.

If you're already in business and are worried about the future then it is important to remain calm and focused. It's also important to continue to strive to grow your business. If you're not striving to grow your business then your business then your business will certainly decline and perhaps fail altogether.

This is a time when many businesses look to reduce their marketing budget. It may be necessary to do this but you should still seek creative ways to maximise your exposure. One of the easiest, most economical ways to promote and market the products and services of your business is through teleseminars. Best of all, no matter what business you're involved in you can use teleseminars as part of your marketing and promotion strategy.

Here are just five ideas to get you started.

1. Book Promotions

Writing a book is actually a great way to promote yourself and your business. There are several different publishing routes you can go down but whether or not your book is a success will depend upon the number of your sales you achieve. You can certainly boost the number of sales of your book by hosting a series of teleseminars as part of your marketing strategy.

Teleseminars of this nature are designed to "explain" your book and so can be used as the foundation of a course. Also, when individuals consume your book in this manner they have a greater understanding of its content and get to know you, the author, more intimately. So when you publish other books and create other products you'll have a bigger audience ready to purchase.

2. Preview Promotions

Interestingly, teleseminars can be used to promote a teleseminar course or program whether the course/program is taught by one person or several experts. Such teleseminars serve as an introduction to the material and the individuals presenting the material.

Teleseminars are also very effective in promoting offline events. Again they provide a virtual platform that allows individuals to get to know the speakers and learn enough about what they will be presenting that it whets their appetite for the main event. They also help to build excitement about a particular event.

3. Question and Answer (Q and A) Calls

It is inevitable that if you deliver a course your participants will have questions. Allocating separate teleseminars to deal with questions can be really helpful to your students. It boosts their understanding of the material and improves retention rates. Even if only a small percentage of individuals ask questions, you can be sure that many more will actually benefit.

Q and A calls can also be used to help your customers gain a better understanding of a product they have purchased and or to address regularly asked questions about their purchase.

The questions which arise as part of these teleseminars can also extremely useful in helping you to improve your course or other product.

4. Prospecting Calls

A key component of a teleseminar is of course your message. So if you have a content-rich message to share you can invite prospective clients to listen to a weekly teleseminar so that they can get to know you better and evaluate whether or you'd be a good fit.

These calls can also be archived to create a rich body of material which you can re-purpose in a multitude of ways to further promote your business.

5. Kick-Start Training

When a client purchases a course they are usually very excited about the prospect of learning and the new material they will be exposed to. Then they see all the new material and overwhelm sets in. They can be at a loss as to where to start and the best way to tackle all the material that is presented.

A teleseminar which can be recorded and made available in the members' area of the particular course or program or even burnt onto a CD and posted along with the course materials can be very helpful. Naturally, this type of kick-start training can also be done as a live event.

Kick-start training can make the difference between someone deciding that your course or program was not for them after all and asking for a refund or lasting the course.

Learn How to Double Your Income Doing Work You Love

If you were given a cent and the ability to double the value of your money everyday for thirty consecutive days then at the end of one month you would have a whopping $5,368,709.12 (five million, three hundred and sixty-eight thousand, seven hundred and nine dollars and twelve cents.

Now doubling your money for 30 consecutive days may seem impractical but what if you could simply double your income and what if you could do so doing what you love instead of grinding out a living? Does this prospect sound appealing?

Many of the people I meet outside of my industry do not do the work they love. They are doing work because it pays the bills. The thing is that you can make money doing work you love and those who have mastered this become very wealthy and often reach a point in their lives where they can take early retirement but they love their work so much that they don't want to give it up.

I believe that each and every one of us has a unique purpose in life. We all have special talents - things that we're good at. When we are doing these things time passes by unnoticed. We feel totally engrossed and alive. Conversely, when we are struggling to do things we do not enjoy time drags by. We feel frustrated, irritable and stressed.

Hence, it's vitally important to discover what your purpose in life is and it is no surprise that your purpose in life is closely aligned to the things you feel passionate about.

Now another human characteristic is that we all have a desire to be and feel successful. Success means different things to different individuals and Robert Allen says that as soon as you start living your life on purpose you become successful.

"Once you're on your purpose path you're instantly successful. You don’t have to achieve your goal to be successful. You just need to discover your path. When you're standing on your path and you take one step forward towards your goal you're instantly successful because you're on your path.
Robert Allen

Think about it. You can achieve "success" in a particular area but if it is not something you care very much about the success feels rather hollow.

Conversely, when you achieve even a small measure of success doing something that you love, the feeling of success is magnified.

So the question is how can you do work that you love and make good money doing it at the same time?

Part of problem with this is some people love what they do so much that they think it would be wrong to be paid and paid well for what they do. There are many arguments against this point of view and I'm going to state just one case.

If what you're doing creates value for another individual, would it not be better if you could create value for even more people and or increase the value that you're able to provide those that you serve? Of course it would. And you can do this if you are properly recompensed for the value you provide.

Now you know when you set goals they should be SMART, i.e.

~Specific
~Measurable
~Achievable
~Realistic
~Time-framed

So what if you could double your income over the next 12 months? How would the quality of your life improve? How would your lifestyle change?

This goal certainly is specific, measurable and time-framed but if you're questioning about how realistic achievable it is then I invite you to check out:

What's the Music Playing in Your Sub-Conscious Mind?

At some point in time you've probably noticed that there's a song playing in your head. It might have been playing in the background for quite some time before your conscious mind became aware of it. It's as though your sub-conscious mind is amusing itself.

Initially, you may not even recognise the tune and, until you bring your conscious mind to focus on it, you may not distinguish the words either.

This has happened to me several times in recent weeks. And while I may have recognised the tune I've had to consciously focus on the words to decipher them. The process can be likened to adjusting a lens to bring an image into focus.

When I have identified the words I have been pleasantly surprised. The words of the song usually accurately reflected an emotion I was experiencing or an affirmation that I wanted to reinforce.

I say "surprised" because what I'm describing here is different from hearing a tune so many times that can't help but sub-consciously play it inside your head. Instead, it's as if my sub-conscious mind is going through my personal database of music to find something that aptly reflects my mood and my emotions. It's behaving like a jukebox that knows me inside out and knows the song to play at the right time.

It has made me even more aware of the importance of giving your mind a nutritious diet. You need to 'feed' your mind positive thoughts which can come from spoken or written affirmations and other sources such as music. And you need to do this on a daily basis of you want to program your sub-conscious mind for success.

The music playing in my head forms part of my self-talk and everyone has some form of audio background track playing in their mind which can be musical or their regular dialogue with self. The trouble is many people do not pay close enough conscious attention to their self-talk particularly when it is negative.

Consequently, they allow a negative soundtrack to play in their minds over and over again continually undermining everything positive they attempt to do. The outcome of this can be seen in the results they are producing with respect to their health, finances, career, relationships, etc.

And when things aren't turning out the way they would like it to be they compound matters by asking themselves:

"What's wrong with me?"

The mind obligingly then searches for answers that particular question and to support the view that something is wrong with that person. The negative self-talk is perpetuated.

If you positively change your self-talk and that background track in your mind you can literally transform your life.

Often when I say this to individuals their immediate response is "But it's hard…" which is simply more evidence of the negative programming of their mind.

It certainly is challenging but isn't it worth it for the rewards you'll reap.

Denis Waitley said:

"Relentless, repetitive self-talk is what changes our self-image."

It's up to you whether your "relentless, repetitive self-talk" improves your self-image and consequently the results you achieve in life or tears you down.

One of my mentors has his own special way of dealing with negative self-talk. Click on the AudioPostcard link below to hear how he eliminated his negative self-talk:

Barack Obama: Inspiration, Hope and Self-Reliance

Barack Obama's election as the 44th President of the United States of America has inspired people of all ages and of all races across the world. More young people than ever before voted for Obama and in his acceptance speech Obama referred to a centenarian Ann Nixon Cooper - 106 years old in fact - who exercised her right to vote in this election.

The election of Barack Obama has given people hope again that things can really be different, but not just different - better. This man has encouraged individuals to have a "can do" attitude. He has encouraged people to embrace change.

However, I read a comment recently that lingered with me. The person questioned that so many people should rely on this one man. And here's the thing. When you read comments from Obama's supporters you know they have not been lulled into a false sense of security.

They are fully aware that the new President will have an enormous task ahead of him. The recession is cutting deep, so too are the wars. The nation is ready for healing and new leadership.

Nonetheless, Obama will certainly make what will be perceived to be mistakes and he will make decisions that will be unpopular. It's just the nature of the beast. There is no way he will please everyone all the time. The man himself is quick to point out the potential pitfalls along the way:

"There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can’t solve every problem."

But he is quick to reassure that this time the people will have a voice that will go beyond election day.

"I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand."

And this is the key.

Millions of people voted for Obama and millions more, without a legal right to vote in the US, voted in spirit partly because they were inspired by his message of positive change. What is needed now is to keep fanning the flames of hope. Individuals need to apply the inspiration they have received from Obama's miraculous journey to a little-know Senator to President-elect of the US to their own lives. People need to rekindle dreams that were abandoned and conceive of new and bigger dreams.

It's not about relying on one man. It's about self-reliance and working together in a co-operative spirit.

For many, the recession is cutting deep, so too are the wars that majority of people have been opposed to. It's time for healing. It's time for change.

Yet, as Obama said:

"It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice."

To create the positive change that so many crave individuals each have to pull their own weight. People can draw inspiration and hope from this new leader but there is no question that anyone should be relying solely on one man to achieve this change. Individuals have to take responsibility for their role in this movement and optimise their own lives.

But there's certainly a new optimism in the air, a new sense of possibility. A definite "can do" attitude. And this is a spirit people the world over can benefit from.
